UBCP/ACTRA International Women’s Day Honouree – Valerie Sing Turner

The UBCP/ACTRA Women’s Committee names Valerie Sing Turner as the International Women’s Day honouree, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Union, the industry, and causes of social justice.

A celebration for International Women’s Day honouring Valerie Sing Turner is being held on March 8th at the UBCP/ACTRA office.

“In a global push for professional and social equality, particularly in boardrooms, the media, and wealth, the 2019 International Women’s Day theme #BalanceForBetter is particularly relevant to UBCP/ACTRA. This year’s honouree, Valerie Sing Turner, is an award-winning artist, producer and activist, and one of Canada’s leading voices advancing equity for indigenous and racialized artists in our country’s creative sector.  Her latest project,  Culturebrew.art, also known as Diverse Theatre BC, is a digital platform for indigenous and racialized artists who work in the performing arts as performers, screenwriters, directors, and in production positions, to enable potential employers to find them easily. Valerie is a member of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, UBCP/ACTRA, and the Playwrights Guild of Canada. One of the rare artists that live their life exactly according to their beliefs,  I am honoured to proclaim Valerie Sing Turner UBCP/ACTRA’s 2019 Woman of the Year” said UBCP/ACTRA Women’s Committee Chair Christine Willes.

The UBCP/ACTRA Women’s Committee encourages all Members, all genders, to participate in International Women’s Day events this year.

The Union of British Columbia Performers (UBCP/ACTRA) is an autonomous branch of ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists), the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 23,000 members across Canada – the foundation of Canada’s highly acclaimed professional performing community.
