How to join as an Apprentice

Benefits of being an Apprentice Member

Your Apprentice Membership Card immediately opens up performing opportunities for you by ensuring your eligibility for all UBCP/ACTRA work. Within UBCP/ACTRA, you will receive all the applicable rights, privileges and mailings of a Full Member including full non-voting participation in UBCP/ACTRA membership meetings. More importantly, as an Apprentice Member you automatically join the professional ranks of your peers performing in film, television and radio.

Applying for Apprentice Membership

If you earn one qualifying work permit you must register it within 6 weeks to be eligible to become an Apprentice Member. This includes work permits for principal and acting roles as well as stunt but excludes work permits issued for background performing.  You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible.

You may be granted an Education credit if you received a degree or diploma in Acting which includes at least 1000 hours of performance based work from a qualifying institution.  All graduates have sixty (60) days from the date of graduation to register an Education Credit as your first Qualifying Credit.  Please contact us if you have any questions or to see if you qualify for an Education Credit.

You will be required to bring the following information:

  • Proof of your Canadian citizenship/permanent resident status (i.e. Canadian passport, birth certificate or permanent residency card)
  • A copy of the contract and pay stub for the credit you are registering OR
  • A sealed copy of your transcript proving your graduation from an institution with 1000 performance-based hours of training.
  • Your current headshot
  • $75.00 for your annual Apprentice fee. (April 1 – March 31)

UBCP/ACTRA Background Members have the opportunity to apply for Apprentice Membership by working 200 days or 1600 hours as a Background Member. There is no time limit for accruing these hours. The accrual commences once a member has joined as a Background Member.

Like Full Members, Apprentice Members may not accept non-union work.
