UBCP Negotiations – News and Info Page

Your UBCP-ACTRA bargaining committee met with producer-signatories of the BC Master Production  Agreement in Los Angeles, the week of June 6th.

We went into bargaining determined to reach an agreement while maintaining our solidarity on the issue of no rollbacks, and we made excellent progress. But more work needs to be done on one outstanding issue — pay.

Negotiations took place over four days. The parties worked productively on a series of contract issues, which we will report  on once a tentative agreement is reached (the parties have agreed not to negotiate in public and so the details of talks will be revealed once all issues are tentatively agreed).

The remaining issue is wage increases. We were very pleased at the progress we made — a series of deep rollbacks demanded by producers were taken off the table during our discussions.

However, producers chose to adjourn the talks after UBCP proposed that members receive a cost-of-living increase to pay similar to the ones awarded to all other performers unions in the industry.

So what happens next?

We are waiting for producers to respond to our latest pay proposal with a counter-offer. We stand ready and willing to resume discussions with the Negotiating Producers at any time.

In the event the Negotiating Producers choose not to make a counter-proposal, UBCP-ACTRA will join the rest of ACTRA as a full participant in the coming IPA negotiations, scheduled for October. We then expect that the pay settlement in the next IPA will form the basis of a settlement of the BC Master Agreement.

ACTRA and UBCP-ACTRA will continue to coordinate closely, and will support each other to ensure fair, reasonable agreements are negotiated for performers across Canada.

Stay tuned for more information and don’t hesitate to contact UBCP President Alvin Sanders if you have any questions or comments. Your bargaining committee will give a further report at our next membership meeting June 18th.
